review 1: I really wanted to like this book since I read so many promising reviews. Unfortunately, I struggled through the entire book. I thought that the characters were not developed well and since the time period of the book was barely a week, I felt like the relationships formed were unrealistic. I also felt like some of the things that the characters said and felt were things that were only said because the characters weren't developed, especially the young children.
review 2: Upon reading the first page and Michelle Sagara’s gorgeous writing – I was hooked. I thought Emma was going to be some weepy, pining heroine but I was pleasantly wrong. She was mourning yes, but strong and kind and complex. I also loved the character of Michael, an autistic character who i... mores realistically portrayed and integral to the story. From the beginning, the plot is a thrilling race to an amazing ending that has unanswered questions, I suppose to be answered in the sequels. less
