review 1: This is the first time I have read anything by Michelle Sagara. This is novella I bought it for the Nook but it also part of a short story collection called Hunter's Moon. I loved this story. It was very unique with its fantasy races, the world itself and how magic works. From my understanding this is a prequel to her actual series. I think I would have enjoyed it more, if this it possible, if I had read some of the series. I did get a little confused about what the races were occasionally and had to go back to remind myself. The story intrigued me so much that I can't wait to read the rest of the series. If you like a world populated with different intelligent species, lots of political intrigue, magic and a fantasy world that does feel like medieval England then you shoul... mored give this series a try.
review 2: I listened to the audiobook for this novella and it was a bit confusing. The world is complex and there are several characters of different races introduced, and the narrator's versions of them did not make it particularly easy to tell apart.Had I read the novella instead, I'm pretty sure it would have gotten a higher rating, but I am very interested in both the characters and their unique world and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them. less

Enjoyed the book, sort of a prequel to "Cast in Shadow," and an introduction to the Elantra series.

It was great to finally see how Kaylin officially joined the Hawks.
