review 1: One of the most enjoyable experiences in my life is reading something that takes our regular, mundane world and makes it seem epic and fantastic. Unwritten does that every issue. Stories are weapons, Stories are a way of controlling the masses, stories are power. This book is all about the power of story, and in this volume, we finally learn how that power is accessed and why it exists in the first place. MANY ideas that you speculate about throughout the series are answered in this trade. I always say the Mike Carrey is the most under-appreciated writer in Comics. This book is good evidence of that, a masterwork that even hardcore comic book fans might not know about.
review 2: I think there may be one more book to this series. Though I've only seen one other... more mention of it. This volume however, does bring an end to the main protagonist, and the big surprise of who he is (though I did figure it out a few volumes back, and what he was trying to do)I have to say, the concept of the story is fascinating. It echoes the concept of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, or one could say Consensus Reality, that we shape our own universe by what we believe and act upon. This story will keep me thinking for a long time.That said, while I enjoyed the graphic novel volumes, and enjoyed the artwork, I would really have preferred a written novel. Graphic novels just don't seem to provide enough sustenance to give me satisfaction in the story. I do know that Mr. Carey is a very good novelist and story teller as I've read his Felix Castor series, and liked them quite a lot. But if graphic novels are his preferred means of writing, I shall not whimper. less
