review 1: Mike Dash's purpose in writing the book,The First Family: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia, is to show the reader how the mafia was organized. The reader should stand with his head high and face the problem no matter what the cost. The book shows how scary things can get in a person’s life, but we have to fight it. The police in the biography can represent the mafia’s problems. When the main character, Guiseppe Morello, kills the police man, this can represent the reader overcoming his/her problem. The First Family: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia is a really interesting book too. All the events that are mentioned in the book will make the reader think really hard about back then. The First Fa... moremily: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia was well written. The author how to put everything in order. The book organizes everything, meaning that the book is always in order. The book gets tense sometimes. For example there is a point in the book where Guiseppe mentions two boys “killing a cop with two knives” (Dash 38). Even though the book included curse words, it was still well written. The curse words make this book more for mature people that can handle it. The part that made me think the most was when the son of Guiseppe, the main character said “the plan worked just as you said” (Dash 153). The story knows know to show people how life was back then. The book was extremely captivating. There is no other book in the world that can make a person feel so scared as much as this one. This story knows how to make the reader realize that the mafia back then was ruthless. I related to Guiseppe a little bit. We both love our famlies and would do anything for them. His father in the story is always trying to care for him even though they both kill people for a living. This book was not boring at all. There will never be a chapter where I would not feel amazed. This book was incredible. The impact that this book can have on its audience is indescribable. This book will never be forgotten by any of its readers, that is how much this book can impact the reader. This book will have a lasting value because it sticks to the readers like glue on paper. This book makes the reader feel like he is in a movie. The way the author wrote this book can be compared with the best movie out there. This book is just so mind blowing that the reader will want to read it again and again. I would recommend this book to the whole world if I could. I would recommend it to the whole world because it just makes the reader feel goose bumps so much that it starts making feel like i am part of the story. For example when Tommaso Petto, one of the characters in the book, has to find a way to get rid of the body he just killed, he says “I have to dig this thing up or cut it into pieces” (Dash 191). This book is really one of a kind. I think the greatest strength of this story is that it never stops making the reader feel astonished by the events that are told in the story. There is not one page that won’t make the reader scared. This book makes a connection with the reader. I think that this book doesn’t really have a weakness unless the reader hates action and drama. This story really doesn’t show any type of problem. The book, The First Family: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia, written by Mike Dash is a phenomenal book. If you have not read it I beg you to. There is really no excuse for you not to read this. If you want to feel like you are in a movie then this is the book for you. This book has nothing wrong with it. It is really well written. Also, the book is captivating. This book will astonish the reader in so many ways, I can’t even count them. This story is truly amazing. MIke Dash sure does know how to right an amazing book.
review 2: Another highly readable and informative non-fiction by Mike Dash. He really does an excellent job of presenting his subjects. Of course, it would be difficult to write a boring mafia book (though undoubtedly it has been done). The most fascinating aspect for me was the thorough early history of the mafia. I had always believed that the rise of the mafia was due to prohibition but this book mostly chronicles the 40 years leading up to the 18th amendment. I guess that was only when it actually started to be lucrative. It is just as unglamorous as my husband describes(who grew up surrounded by mafia in Brooklyn). It seems incredible that these men worked so hard for not so much money in a field where one would inevitably end up in jail and/or murdered. less
