review 1: Mike Dash has become one of my favorite authors. The mafia is one of my favorite subjects. So when Mike Dash writes a mafia book I am happier then Bobby Deniro after the Lufthansa heist. This book details the birth of the mafia in New York and sets the stage for mafia legends Luciano, Costello, Genovese. Before them came The Clutch Hand Peter Morello and the black hand. Originally counterfeiters his gang soon controlled all of Italian Harlem. This book is filled with action, history, nyc landmarks and tells the true tale of how the NYC mafia became big. I have read this book twice as it is easily one of my favorite reads.
review 2: This was a good book about the beginings of the mafia here in the U.S. Mr. Dash has paper work from Italy the Secret Servi
... morece, New York agency's , and the F.B.I. Really though this was a family run opperation until the main guy went. Away for 15 yrs. He had to put someone else in charge and that was when everything changaed. The Mafia in the U.S. started to allow other people in and the started to go to the side. Mr. Dash also points out that the city of New York did not think they had a problem. The U.S. Goverment were the ones started looking at them. The one New York Detective who was trying to make a case against them got no help until he was killed. Even Lucky Luciano, and Joe The Boss Bonanno were afraid of the Clutch until his death and then the real changes started for the Mafia, the true meaning of family was gone. A very good book. less
