review 1: There is a lot that is good about this novel: A strong protagonist who is both likable and flawed. Misfortune -- although, perhaps WAY too much misfortune. An interesting setting and an original concept. All of that is good, well, mostly good. But there is also a lot that is not so good about this novel, and those not so good parts are what made this reader feel like she was climbing a mountain while she was reading this book.
review 2: The first half of this book was hard to read. It was slow to start, depressing, and violent (repeated beatings with a cane). It picked up at about half way, and became more interesting.
