review 1: This is an enjoyably dark collection of tales from the mind that created Hellboy beginning with the Amazing Screw-on Head, which finds the title character battling demons from inside a turnip with the aid of Mr Groin and Mr Dog. This collection also includes The Magician and the Snake, Abu Gung and the Beanstalk and The Witch and her Soul. The collection also includes additional material in the back of the book that shows the character development and how Mignola created the worlds found within its pages. The stories are written well and are surprisingly engrossing despite them being relatively short and the illustrations really capture the feel of the tales and bring the characters to life. Overall I rather enjoyed this collection although I wasn't keen on all of the ... morestories hence the three star rating but this was still a good read.
review 2: Screw-On Head. Zounds, how I love Screw-On Head. Seriously, it's funny, it's weird, it's off-kilter, it's brilliant.Along with Screw-On Head, we have a series of strange and curious tales from the mind of Mike Mignola (and one from his 7 year old daughter). One thing I liked about all these tales was that there were these little bits, just the tiniest fragments, that connect them all together somehow. Don't try to make sense of it, just enjoy the ride.Also, Doctor Snap, one of the characters in Screw-On Head, faces off against the preparing Martian invaders right out of War of the Worlds. How cool is that? less
