review 1: I wanted to enjoy this book. It's right up my alley: dystopian fiction with a female lead? Awesome, right? Not really. At first I thought iit was because the plot of the first half of the novel revolved around just the protagonist and her mom that made it so boring, but then I thought about Cormac McCarthy's The Road and how it followed the journey of a father and son. Then I realized that the writing itself is just sub-par. The characters are so flat that I don't feel for any of them. In fact, I felt more for an infant character who is mentioned in the book in no more than a handful of words than I did for Lynn. I stuck with the book until about half way through, then I had to admit to myself that it just wasn't for me.
review 2: I liked this book a lo
... moret when I started it, but by the end I lost some interest in the story. There was a lot of sad scenes as well as violent ones in this, but that is to be expected when reading a post apocalyptic story. Lynn was a tough character that was raised to look out for herself and to not trust anyone, but after her mom dies all that changes and she starts to let people in. I liked Eli and his family and how Lynn worked together with them. I am not thrilled with how this was concluded, but will read the next book in the series because I would love to see things from Lucys perspective. less
