Not a Drop to Drink
review 1: A lovely follow-up on Lynn and Lucy as they make their way across the country to seek Lucy's fortune in California. Older now, Lucy leaves her family, friends, the boy she loves, and the place she knows as home when polio threatens the lives of all and claims many. A great book with twists and turns as Lucy and Lynn meet others on their journey. Some friendly and some with intentions less than good keep the pair guessing as to who they can trust and who they cannot. A heartwarming and heart wrenching tale told as a girl learns the hard ways of life and becomes a woman, and the woman who helps her on her way.
review 2: Mindy McGinnis is one of my favorite YA writers. I loved NOT A DROP TO DRINK, and I loved this sequel, set ten years after the events of the firs
... moret novel, in a nearly waterless world where grim Lynn and her ward, the now teenaged Lucy, struggle for survival and dignity. The qualities that made NOT A DROP TO DRINK so great--the spare, beautiful prose; the haunting landscape; the perfectly rendered characters and dialogue; the harsh, unsentimental storyline--are all on full display in this book. I had a few minor quibbles with IN A HANDFUL OF DUST: it drags a bit toward the middle, and there's a late plot development that I found out of step with the book's overall realism. But these issues didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book. In fact, I liked it so much, I'm planning to teach it in my environmental literature class next year! less
