review 1: I have just finished reading The Queen of Palmyra. It is hard to say I enjoyed the book because it is a difficult read because of the life of Flo. A mother who deserts here and a father who is abusive. The times it was set in were hard times. I thought they were portrayed well. Throughout the book there is a feeling of doom and bad things about to happen. You could feel the heat of a long summer through the writing and Flo's striving to understand the world in which she finds herself.
review 2: I was SO upset with this book after reading the great reviews it received. I found the narrative to be difficult to follow and much too lengthy and was tempted to put this book down numerous times. Don't want to give any spoilers but I'm also extremely disappointed
... morein our main character and her lack of action once she found out who her father was and what he had done. I also felt that the attempts of meta commentary did not work within the context of a young girls narrative. Again just extremely disappointed in this book, oh well, on to the next one! less
