review 1: I must confess I haven't read much historical fiction — especially not from as far back as the late 1400s! — but I really enjoyed this story set in Spain at the time of the New Inquisition, the expulsion of Jews, and Christopher Columbus's plans to discover a route to paradise. I learned a lot while becoming absorbed in the personal journeys of the characters, and I had a tear in my eye at the end. Well done!
review 2: I'm perplexed by the good reviews of this novel. I found the story disjointed, the characters one- or two-dimensional, and despite the subject matter--fairly boring. I nearly abandoned it several times, but plodded through, hoping it would get better. It picked up about 116 pages in, but I still didn't find it worthy of four or five stars.
... more I think the story could have easily taken 600 pages, allowing for more detail and character development, especially given the subject matter. One of the issues I had with the novel were the number of peripheral characters introduced that did nothing to further or enhance the plot. Ultimately, I gave the book three stars for effort, but will not read another novel by this author. less
