review 1: Urban fantasy became a worn-out and tired mish-mash of old horror tropes and soft porn in the last decade or so, moving quite far from its noir roots. This novel is a breath of fresh air. Very tightly written, with an excellent command of both language and style, Brennan's first novel is at absurdly high level of quality, easily equal to early Laurell Hamilton and some of the best works by Jim Butcher.
review 2: This novel is much better than your typical urban fantasy. Though the story does fit the genre well, it is far more entertaining than other novels I have read with the same structure. Brennan is really great at creating unique characters with memorable quirks.
