review 1: Reviewed for Read Your Writes Book Reviewsby GeminiLight Up the Night was a very straight forward and entertaining book. It gave a lot of technical information regarding several aspects of the military and its weaponry. I felt thoroughly informed and was able to get a very good mental picture of everything that went on. I applaud the author for taking the time to truly detail each and every mission. Light Up the Night is the story of Navy Seal William “Bill” Bruce and SOAR helicopter pilot Patricia “Trisha” O’Malley. Even though they are in different branches of the military, their lives become intertwined as they take part in operations to decrease the pirate activity in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. There is a lot that goes on regarding Bill and Trisha. ... moreThey meet under dangerous conditions when Bill is inadvertently rescued by Trisha and her helicopter team while he is undercover in Somalia. Although they get off on the wrong foot, they eventually become enamored with each other. Of course, they both have baggage that plays a huge role in the direction of their relationship but we all know that they end up together. It’s the journey that keeps things interesting. Their journey takes them on some explosive missions rescuing hostages and annihilating pirates. Generally, it’s expected that their emotions will play a negative role in the outcome of the missions but that’s not the case at all. Instead, their relationship, their differences, and their baggage makes them better at what they do. Clearly, they have their conflicts but they resolve them in a believable and rational manner. I look forward to reading other books from this author. I like the way that M.L. Buchman honors the military and shines a positive light on its servicemen and women. Source: Publisher via NetGalley
review 2: Light Up the Night is book five in the series Night Stalkers. Night Stalkers are the 160th SOAR. I found the Goodreads.com blurb wrong, well not about Trisha that part was right but William Bruce is SEAL not CIA and he goes by Bill not Will, yet another victim of blurb gone wrong. Light Up the Night is my first M. L. Buchman novel and I found it enjoyable, I didn't love it but it was a good read. I love strong female characters and Trisha is strong to a fault. Bill is a private person but for some reason he can open up to the fiery Irish helicopter pilot who saved his bacon; he is one of the best kind of heroes cocky and determined. My main complaint is that their was no real direction, It was all character development and Trisha and Bill growing as people and learning how to deal with their personal issues with some pretty awesome fighting thrown in here and there. It is definitely a man versus self conflict kind of story with the man versus man side conflict. I did love the romance between Trisha and Bill. The story starts of almost quite literally with a bang, with Trisha flying in with her fellow Night Stalkers to rescue hostages from Somali pirates and ends up having to rescue the undercover SEAL who was placed inside. Bill originally takes offense to the way Trisha saved his ass but the immediate attraction to the little spitfire can not be denied. Bill is offered a spot on the team because of his inside knowledge of the pirates, but after a couple of missions he gets word his mother has died and flies off to deal with that. Trisha meanwhile tried to hid the fact that on one of the last missions she was shot at three times, Chief Warrant 3 Maloney gives Trisha the ultimatum shape up and start playing by the rules or go back to her former post. She is given a weeks paid vacation to think about it. Not wanting to go home finds out where Bill went and follows him to Vermont. Trisha helps Bill deal with the loss of his mother and in return he forces her to deal with her past, mainly her parents. After an enlightening conversation with her father she makes her decision to go back and play by the rules. Trisha and Bill hit a bump in the road after a while of being back, neither know where they are going with this relationship but a dangerous rescue mission changes all that. less
