review 1: This is Black Hawk Down, the romance novel. Emily Beale is one of my new favorite heroines, and Mark Henderson is just too awesome. I can't quite explain what I love about this novel, only that I LOVED it. The Hindu Kush landscape, the technical detail of the combat choppers and the way Emily and Mark fly them, the hand-to-hand combat scenes...SO immersive and adrenaline-filled and ballet-like in their fluid choreography...And the way that Emily was totally the alpha female without being cocky, bitchy, or over-sexualized is so refreshing. I wasn't 100% engaged in the assassination plot line 100% of the time, but the strength of the character development kept me glued to my iPad throughout. This is one that I'll be rereading again, and soon. If you're even remotely interest... moreed in military or romantic suspense, then you MUST read this series. It's that good.
review 2: 3.5 starsSo, parts of this book were a solid 4. The military information was very well done - although at times a bit too "info-dumping". I enjoyed immensely the character of Major Mark Henderson. The author did a great job of developing this character including the realisation of his feelings for Emily. His inner dialogue was completely how I would imagine a man in his situation to be. SPOILERS AHEAD:Unfortunately, other parts of this book were a 3. I love a kickass heroine but in this book, Emily seemed just too good to be true. In fact, at times, I felt like she was the epitomy of the authors' idea of a perfect woman and not at all realistic. I mean, she was the best pilot, the only woman to get through numerous military trainings, she was a cordon bleu chef, she was only one of 10% of people able to smell cyanide, she could bring down the best secret service agent in the business, she survived numerous scenarios where no one else would have. To top all that off, she had 2 amazing men in love with her, including the President!. As the story progressed, it became harder and harder to relate to this character. There was zero vulnerabilities shown by Emily and this just made it easier to get pulled out of the story. I get the feeling the author was much more comfortable in Marks' head and in all the military portions of this book. I still enjoyed it, and will read the next in the series. But I am really hoping that the female character is not so picture bloody perfect as Emily was in this one. less
