review 1: Chester's Masterpiece by Melanie Watt is a delightful and humorous battle of wills for control over the story. Chester has decided that he is going to replace Melanie in her picture book making endeavors. By cleverly stealing some important materials, Chester has hijacked the book and a very red marker. But this smart kitty is not going to get away with it; Melanie, with her well-timed sticky notes, is going to try to resume control. Between writer's block and through some not-so-great plots, Chester's story will finally run it's course. But in a most unexpected way. From jacket to jacket, Chester's red pen is in evidence on every page. The pages range from blank white sheets stapled into the book to notebook paper with tape and edges visible. A back-and-forth dialogue bet... moreween Melanie and Chester will make the reader search through the pages for more of Chester's additions. The red pen drawings are simplistic and childlike, with the only real color coming from Chester himself. A clever use of writing utensils and office supplies as art, made even more spectacular with the running story told by Melanie and Chester.
review 2: I loved this book! The way Chester and the author communicated throughout the book to help Chester write a book was funny and provided appropriate humor for young students. This would be a good book to use when introducing writing and the different story elements that go along with it. I would definitely use this book with younger students when it was time to talk about setting, character, and plot. less
