review 1: I almost didn't finish this, but kept going to the end because I remember enjoying Brick Lane a lot. In the Kitchen, however, was pretty underwhelming. The first half was a hot mess- unfocused, meandering, and infuriatingly slow. If you stick with it, you'll eventually find what the author was trying to say in this extremely subtle portrait of the today's British society, where the older, more traditional generation is coming to grips with today's multicultural society. There are a few glimmers of interesting insights and good characterization, but they are too few and far between to rescue this novel.
review 2: I knew this book had unfavorable reviews and, so, it sat on my shelf for a while. I know why the reviews were tepid. She should never have left the kit
... morechen. Rather than make Gabe the focus, following him down his spiraling , self absorbed path, we could have keep our focus on the most intriguing characters - the kitchen staff. While the book seems too long, the conclusion is oddly rushed and sloppy. Ali's Brick Street was far superior. less
