review 1: When Ana, the little girl, has time to her own, she spends it with her libro - her book, her only book, a book gifted to little Ana by the only teacher in their village, who has since moved away. One day a man - a librarian - with two donkeys (burros), Alfa and Beto, carrying books, visits Ana's village. Ana has all the books she can carry. When will the bibliotecario on the burro, the Biblioburro, return? Ana can't wait. This endearing short story is inspired by a real-life biblioburro the author met - Luis Soriano Bohorquez, in Columbia, who delivers books to children in remote villages on his two donkeys.
review 2: I thought that this book was magical!I had the fortunate opportunity to meet both Monica Brown and John Parra at the National Latino Children's Li
... moreterature Conference last year, where they both presented their inspiration for writing and illustrating this wonderful story, based on the life of a real biblioburro, Luis Soriano Bohorquez. This story shows how a thirst for knowledge can overcome any obstacles, and that one can find kindness in the strangest places. It sheds a light on conditions that we may take for granted in many areas of the US, having no restriction to reading materials and public libraries in nearly every part of the country. John Parra's illustrating style is beautiful, somehow managing to make acrylic paint resemble chalk on a wooden surface. I fell in love with the story and people behind it. As a librarian, I found it only too fitting to purchase a copy to put on my desk at work. less
