review 1: "From the moment he could talk, Neftali surrounded himself with words that whirled and swirled...". In this non-fiction story about Pablo Neruda, words literally whirl and swirl on each page as part of the colorful illustrations. On each page, Spanish and English words fill in blank spaces giving the reader a sense of the language that Neruda loved. These words, a bit distracting at times, are painted into beautiful and detailed illustrations that could each stand alone without the accompanying informational text below. The story itself is a brief journey through Neruda's childhood and career and although it is not a book of poems, the language is rich and flows like poetry at times. This book is suited for grades 2-4 and would work well accompanied by some of Neruda's... more poetry, which is unfortunately not included in this book. There could also be a social studies connection to learn more about Chile and it's history. review 2: I love books about Pablo Neruda. And his poetry.Ever read The Dreamer?Loved that one too. This one is simpler of course, but I LOVE the illustrations! The images are literally made of words, so we get to see the world the way Pablo Neruda saw it.The story has a nice pace and takes us through key moments in his life, touching on many different things. What a great overview and introduction to his poetry!A lovely biography. less

Gorgeous gorgeous illustrations. In my opinion, it is deserving of a Caldecott.
