review 1: The Drowning Spool is a fun, easy reading. I picked the audio version because I needed to do some very monotonies work like filing and I thought the book would keep me focused on the task. The book was perfect for the purpose-the story was engaging and the characters likable and I was looking forward to find how the action would unfold. The series are about Betsy Devonshire, owner of the Crewel World needlework shop, and a part-time amateur detective. She usually gets involve in investigating a murder, encouraged by the circle of people, who know her such as her employees, clients, friend . Police is aware of her skills based on previous solved crimes and let her get involved with a case.The plot usually develops in a familiar pattern. Someone is found dead and Betsy start... mores to investigate. There are always few suspects from the start and various clues are given but with little indication to point to the killer. The ending is not that surprising but the reader are left to guess until the last chapter.
review 2: This murder mystery series features a mature woman who owns a needlework shop in a small town near Minneapolis. The winter weather is often part of the plot. Read them in sequence so that the characters and references make sense.The plots are good, and the books include descriptions of and tips for all kinds of needlework: knitting, embroidery, needlepoint, etc. This volume was an interesting who-done-it, but it seems like the novels are becoming a bit formulaic. less
