review 1: What a family. I admire McInerey's talent in creating this cast of characters. An English family takes up resident in a heritage house in country Victoria. The local community doesn't really accept them and they don't plan on being accepted either. In spite of myself, I wanted to know what happened to them all in the end. Does one feel satisfied when the superior, bossy oldest sister ends up running her own very successful nanny service in Chicago and puts on a lot of weight, never finding a man? And so forth. I walked the dog while listening to this story and it was perfect as I wanted to keep walking to hear more, in spite of myself.
review 2: Another book written about Australia which I read while in Australia. It made a good holiday read though maybe
... more rather too drawn out. It is a tale of deception and the consequences. One family comes from England to run the Australian equivalent of a stately home. Their next-door neighbour is determined to keep her distance but inevitably she becomes involved when her young son makes friends with the son and youngest daughter of the English family. It gets complicated as parents try to protect their children by not telling them the truth. However, we know that the two young lovers will meet again because we are told this in the prologue. less
