review 1: I'm so glad that I had the patience to allow this story to unfold. It made the 2nd half of the book all the more enjoyable. Another 'messy' relationships book from Monica. Being able to perceive situations by the different characters, with their differing motives and how their 'intentions' panned out was very interesting. Highly relevant story regarding the decisions we make, for good or not, and the effects they have on other people. I would have given the book 4.5 stars if I had the option.
review 2: At home with the Templetons - by Monica McInerney. This book is well written and thorough - at some points, a bit too thorough. By that I mean, I was struggling to finish reading the book as towards the end it got a little long winded and probably could of done wi
... morethout the 'catch up' stories of where all the other characters were at in their lives.Lets be honest here, this books main character is the little girl Gracie, who loves her family's business (a live-in museum at 'Templeton Hall' where every weekend the family dress up in costume from the gold rush era in Victoria, Australia and give tours around the house and tell of what it was like to live back during the gold rush). The story mainly follows her and tells the story of the Templeton family through her. This book took a long time to start - setting the scene and back ground of all the characters (Gracie, her mother - Eleanor, father - Henry, sisters - Charlotte and Audrey, brother - Spencer, crazy alcoholic aunt - Hope, and the neighbouring family - mother and son of Nina and Tom).Once the characters were set and the story started flowing, I found this book enjoyable. The characters, although some what weird and 'alien-like', were still relatable and charming (most of them anyway with the exception of Hope).I enjoyed reading Part two of this book - this started off written through letters and faxes between Gracie and Nina and Eleanor/Henry to Nina. Part way through this 'part two' section, it returned to normal writing and the story grew more intense with each turning chapter. Monica the author was highly descriptive in the most concerning sections which allowed me to laugh and cry and be emotional with the characters as they experienced life in different ways.Part three did start off well, still following the stories of the Templeton family and Nina and Tom, although it does start to drag on, and on, and on, and on. I feel as though some of it was unnecessary, as we have started to mainly focus on Gracie through most of the book, it starts to then dip more into the lives of all the other Templeton children right when Gracie's life is hanging and I was constantly waiting, turning the pages to hear more about what Gracie was going to do next but it took some persisting to finally bring it back to her and hear the ending of this epic story of first love, betrayal, heartache, tragedy, revenge and finally have a happy ending after everything they had been through.I did enjoy this book - I found myself starting to read around 8pm, and then next minute it was 11:30-12!! I was hooked. less
