review 1: Monique Truong implements a unique writing style with the integration of synesthesia into her character's dialogue. The main character, Linda, experiences tastes whenever she hears certain words, each with their own individual tang. This novel is brimming with multitudes of stories, which although are interesting, make it somewhat difficult to follow at times. Perhaps this was intentionally done in order to problematize the issues of translation across cultures and the perception thereof.
review 2: I've just begun this book, and am already in love. Linda tells us she loved her mother from age seven to eleven--four good years. It is refreshing to read a book by a woman who had a difficult relationship with her mother. (Every other woman author seems to have ador
... moreed her mother, who was the most beautiful, most loving creature ever to walk the earth. I often miss my mother something fierce, but it was never easy or smooth between us. I finally have an author with whom I feel some level of identity/comfort in this regard.) And the reasons for this difficult mother/daughter relationship--whoa! But no spoilers here. You'll have to read the book.Linda's synesthesia--in this case flavors experienced with word--is rendered with the flavors in italics right after the words, no space. Obviously this makes some of the book hard to read. I think that's the point. It's effective. This is a complex family story. A beautifully written, powerful family story. less
