The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation
review 1: If you don't enjoy melancholy, yet dramatic and meaningful endings, you should make up an alternate universe where Octavian, Dr. Trefusis, Pro Bono and the others live happily somewhere, raising their families and telling tales of the war to their children around the fire, just as they dreamed. If however, you wish to be moved to sighs and tears and feel intensely satisfied with the realism in this book, then read this sequel. Also, read the author's note at the end; it could really make you think about liberty and our society.
review 2: This was very interesting. The slave perspective on the Revolution. It really highlighted the hypocrisy of our Founders, clamoring for and demanding freedom and liberty while maintaining slavery. It was gritty and honest and I
... more think it is important to hear and understand all sides of all stories. I also think it is a disservice to idealize our Founders...they were real men with real flaws and weaknesses. I also think it is a disservice to idealize victims of historical horrors. I was glad that this novel touched on all the origins of slavery, including the tribal wars where africans sold africans into slavery. I appreciated the message and I liked the characters, but I don't ascribe to the "white guilt" theory the author seems to hold. less

Not as good as the first book. Loved the first book. This one was kind of lackluster.

Very moving. Bittersweet ending, leaning towards bitter, but extremely well-written.

Not as great as the first...It seemed to drag on forever. Still, great history.
