review 1: A BITE BORING AND TO MUCH ANGST!!An Unlikely Duchess was a bit boring and the storyline proceeding forward was slow. It was the same thing repeated over and over. Rebecca the youngest daughter of the Earl Ranford. was a hoyden, she got herself in one mishap after another. Her mishaps take up the majority of the story. Edward the Duke of Hartridge has fallen in love with the beautiful young Rebecca despite her not being proper Duchess material. The angst in the story goes on way to long. Rebecca is a talented, beautiful and wealthy titled young lady. So why make her out to be a bumbling fool for 80% of the story? Never the less Rebecca is endearing and she tries not to get in trouble and bothersome situations. Edward is kind an attentive to her. There is also this farmer ... moreGeorge Simmons who is stalking Rebecca and even follows her to London for her come out season. This part was not believable at all. George even involves Lady Sarah, a married women who wants to have an affair with Edward. She insults Rebecca in Hyde Park and when Rebecca strikes back with her insults and takes Lady Sarah down a notch. Lady Sarah decides to get even and partners with a serial rapist!!! To hurt Rebecca! What nonsense All Rebecca and Edward a Duke had to do was report the man becasue they were Titled the man would have been imprisoned and probably transported. So that whole scenario with George stalking her could have been resolved very easily and not dragged out. I gave An Unlikely Duchess 3 stars becasue I didn't hate the story but I didn't like it either. I think the author Nadine Millard has the potential to write a better story then this. She need to pull back on all the ridiculous angst. Get to the romance and relationship building.
review 2: If you love "Pride and Prejudice" style books and Regency period romance, you will love this book. It is from a new author who says she is writing two more in this series. I cannot wait for them! I loved the characters, the detail in her writing and the romance (clean). I love the personality and spunk of Rebecca and the charisma, devotion, and personality of Edward. (Though I wish they would have been more honest about their feelings towards each other to each other a little earlier on in the book). The cover art work is what initially drew me to the book and now I have found another author to add to my list of author's I love to read. less
