review 1: Tate, a clever pseudonym for a more richy-rich name, is need of a cheap place where she can earn her living as a metal sculptor and live her life as she sees fit. Problem is, the only part of NYC that'll take her is in Golgotham, quite literally a whole other world inside NYC. To help ease her into the strangeness and prejudice against humans that Golgatham presents, is Hexe, her new landlord and a Kymerian, a race of witches/warlocks who practice magic for sale. Despite being from two completely different worlds, Tate and Hexe have a lot more in common than each expected, but hesitate at anything more than good friendship. However, when a new friend of theirs is in need of their protection, it forces them to re-evaluate their feelings for each other.Right Hand Magic has a... more great setting. Collins clearly had a vision of this world, thinks slightly more out of the box than most, and it's well described. And that's about it. There is, virtually, no real plot and what little there is, is treated like an afterthought and completely obvious. The world created paid off in the long run but it did all the heavy lifting because the author played it far too safe and was unimaginative in everything else.Bottom line, Right Hand Magic is more like an okay YA effort than 'adult' paranormal romance fiction. It lacks maturity, has weak dialog, no tension or edge, and zero character development but it does move very swiftly from one scene to next. While I like a good setting, I also like a good plot that has depth, intelligence and building toward something more than just mere fluff. Golgatham itself, by far the best character in the book, got me to read the whole thing and not regret it but I'm not sure that's enough to get me to slog through the second one. But, if you're in the mood for a read that requires little thought or investment in the characters, then this book'll do you just fine. Otherwise, don't expect more than something to pass the hour.
review 2: Sculptor Tate begins her story with 2 bits of good news. 1) she is going to have a showing at the Templeton Gallery and 2) she has a line a new and less expensive place to live. The new apartment will have the extra advantage of no memories of her cheating ex-boyfriend. The tricky side of the news is that she is moving to Golgotham, a section of NYC that is home to satyrs, centaurs and many other interesting and potentially scary creatures. Her landlord is a Kymeran, mostly human to look at with cat-slit eyes and hands with 6 fingers. Most Kymerans are ambidextrous magic uses, using both hands to mix positive and negative energies. Hexe is determined to practice only right hand magic, so he refuses to curse anyone or do harm with magic. Tate enjoys Golgotham and the area is having a positive effect on her art. Then Lukas appears bringing trouble with him. Lukas is a Bastet, or were-cat, and he has come to the big city to see the world. Unfortunately of of the first things that happens is that Lukas is captured by a creature who runs gladiatorial entertainment for lots of money. Lukas meets Tate & Hexe when he escapes and Hexe begins to heal the damage done to Lukas’s feet and the three become friends. When Hexe & Lukas try to attend Tate’s show they are refused entry and while returning to Golgotham Lukas is re-captured. Tate and Hexe join forces, call for allies and rush to try and save Lukas. There is a considerable amount of drama and excitement before the story is over. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more in the series. less
