review 1: This book continues the story of Lizzie Sanders. Lizzie has moved to North Carolina with her daughter Victoria to live with her sister, Sallie and her two small children, and their parents. Life altering events change Lizzie's role in the family to leader of the family when her parents unexpectantly die. Lizzie, Sallie, and the children are forced to go on and survive the war while the men are away at battle. Will Sallie's husband Ransom come home? Will Lizzie's fiancée Joel Simpson come home? Will the women and the children be able to make it in their absence?
review 2: Read this as a sequel to Carolina Rain. Here's my review for that novel as it applies to both:Read this novel as part of a trip to North Carolina. Set in the Civil War period it gave a go
... moreod feel for the pain and suffering in the South, issues surrounding slavery etc. and that is what I was looking for. The BIG downside for me was that there was very poor editing and e-book format was very faulty. I would strongly advise the author to pull the book, have it professionally edited and hire someone to do her formatting.Beyond Sandy Ridge, however, did not have the strength of character development or story arc that Carolina Rain had. At times it felt like Ms. Brewer was rushing through the story to get it done.Sorry for the harsh review. I would not bother if I did not think the author is a talented writer and could put out a more finished novel. She did add to the enjoyment of my visit to North Carolina and rounded out my feel for the Civil War experience from the perspective of the Confederacy. less
