review 1: Until now I had never thought that I would find another author with the power to evoke an authentic sense of time and place as did Laura Ingalls Wilder in her stories of pioneer life. Until now I had never thought that I would find another author who could write with the authentic voice of the antebellum South as did Joel Chandler Harris in Uncle Remus stories. Until now I had not read Carolina Rain by Nancy B. Brewer.Anyone interested in reading a really good tale well told should get a copy and settle down with it. Make sure that the family is either asleep or otherwise occupied, and that you have turned off the cell phone. You won't want to be disturbed. Yes, it's really that good.I suppose there will be those who will be disappointed if they are expecting a silly heroi... morene like Scarlet O'Hara. Ms. Brewer's heroine, Lizzie Sanders, is a strong woman who adapts to the exigent circumstances of civil war rather than playing its victim. Some may wonder if such a woman could have existed. The truth is that such women have always existed and I suspect that Ms. Brewer is one herself otherwise, how could she have crafted such a tale.
review 2: Read this novel as part of a trip to North Carolina. Set in the Civil War period it gave a good feel for the pain and suffering in the South, issues surrounding slavery etc. and that is what I was looking for. The BIG downside for me was that there was very poor editing and e-book format was very faulty. I would strongly advise the author to pull the book, have it professionally edited and hire someone to do her formatting. less
