review 1: this book was very good. i liked the way this was written as the point of view of ratchet. i thought that i could really relate to the feeling of how she was feeling like she wanted a friend. but at some points the book got boring and kinda dragged on.i liked how it really explained who ratchet was as a person. the book helped me understand what ratchet was feeling. i liked the part when her and hunter where having a water fight.
review 2: I was pleasantly surprised in reading this book. I hadn't done any research into what the book was about or read any other work by the author Nancy Cavanaugh but it was so touching and I really enjoyed this easy read. This upper elementary (grades 4,5,6) journal style book holds quite the message. It's target audience is for
... more both boys and girls as the main character, Rachel or known as Rachet by her father, struggles with friendships, having a single parent, and dealing with her sometimes embarrassing dad. Many of our students today can relate to main character in the book as they probably went through similar changes in life. Rachel writes in her journal every day as exercises for writing during her home schooling taught by her father. Writing is a passion of hers and an outlet to express frustration, loneliness, and hope. Throughout this story you can connect with Rachel and get to know about her life through her journal writing. This story could encompass many writing activities within the classroom. In a part of the story Rachel writes a opinion piece that gets submitted into the town newspaper. Students could write a persuasive piece supporting a cause that they want to see through. This books is also a good example of how journal writing can be private and an outlet of expression and feelings. A teacher could involve a private writing time for students to express themselves much like Rachel did. less
