A Roxy Abruzzo Mystery
review 1: Rosy is a fun character, she's tough and had a hard start in life, including a teen pregnancy. This is a bit of a rollicking tale rather like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. I thoroughly enjoyed it, there are a few dark over tones, like drug addiction but they are dealt with as a part of life which I guess they are for a lot of people. The mystery was a good one, I didn't suspect the killer pretty much till I read it. I will read the next one.
review 2: I'm not sure I'd categorize this as a mystery at all. For the first half of the book I don't know if I would have known Roxy was the main character because so much time was spent focused on other characters' points of view. The blurb I read describing the book made me think it would be a very different kin
... mored of character. There wasn't much, if any, focus on actually solving the murder in this so-called mystery. It just felt like there was a mild curiosity regarding the murder and much more focus on the statue that the reader already knew about in the first chapter. The main focus of the book seemed to be introducing the background for future books about the characters. The last third of the book was MUCH faster the the first two thirds. I spent a lot of time convincing myself to keep reading about obnoxious characters so I could discuss this book at book club. Roxy was an unpleasant version of a tough "sexy" woman. I found the sex unnecessary and just more reason to dislike Roxy. By the end of the book I was mildly interested in her potential but I'd never have made it there on my own. I have no intention of reading more despite the ending making me feel better than the first 290 or so pages. Nooch was a decent but not particularly interesting character, as was Sage, and I rather liked Flynn despite Roxy's hints that he may have been no good in the past. As a person familiar with Pittsburgh I was sometimes insulted by her descriptions of the city and also sure that no one would be able to identify the setting as Pittsburgh unless they knew the area enough to recognize some names. I felt like if she'd used different names instead and told me it was set in another city I'd have been none the wiser. I suppose I'm not part of the same kind of culture in town as Roxy. less
