review 1: After reading His Frozen Heart by Nancy Straight, I fell in love with her writing and could not wait to dive into another one of her books. By luck I learned that Blood Debt, which is the first installment in the Touched Series, was free on amazon and I immediately bought it. Again, I was not disappointed in my choice of books. Nancy takes us into a world here centaurs exist. This was the first book I read where centaurs were involved and I must say, what a breath of fresh air! Being that not many writers touch upon this race, the book was one of a kind from the very first page, what a relief! Now that I raved about the author I will rave about Blood Debt! I adored Camille and her new found family at the very beginning, they all accepted her with open arms (I always felt th... moreat they were too open and something else was going on). There was only one main character that I did not like and I wasn’t supposed to like her, every character stood out to me in their own wayThere was also so much mystery within the story that Camille needs to uncover. Even after finishing the first book, I have questions unanswered. This means that I WILL be reading book two to find out more. I also love that the story had a forbidden love; I was rooting for all forbidden love within the book the whole time. I was very engaged from cover to cover and it has a lot to do with the world that Nancy Straight developed. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books that involves fantasy with a little bit of Greek mythology mixed in.
review 2: Hmm I honestly was pretty torn about the rating here. On the one hand I had never before encountered the theme of centaurs in a book before, so I was intrigued and really interested in knowing more about this society but somehow the story around these mystical creatures was just too simple some how.So first I was a little too annoyed at how well everyone took the news of Camille belonging to the Strayer family. The only sane person appeared to be Daniel who questioned everyone's behavior critically. Then the secret of Camille's heritage is revealed and just as she did with the news of her father she just takes it all almost passively. Oh I'm a centaur? Oookay.... This bugged me. Once this secret was out the story became far too predictable. Of course Drake is the one to catch her before she falls because he saw her and just knew she was the one! Of course they gonna end up together, that was a no brainer from the beginning. And the moment Bianca said Drake was not her first choice, I knew they would work Gage into this tangled mess. It was too easy. Another thing that annoyed me was the portrayal of this sciety. So these centaur men supposedly are descendants from such proud, strong and fierce warriors but all everyone only cares about is getting hitched. That's it. Respectable doctors who volunteer and NFL pros are reduced to nothing but mindless puppy-eyed softies who's sole existence depends on sucking up to Centaurides. And if they have no chance of getting one, they'll whine about how terrible it is to have to marry a human. I honestly hated that. Then there's Camille... On the one hand I sympathized with her and her anger that everyone thought it was alright to force marriage onto her, on the other hand she acted like a spoilt, arrogant, selfish and self-absorbed bitch. And honestly, if I found out that my dead mother's spirit was with me and I had the ability to learn how to speak with her, I would spend every waking moment trying to perfetc that art. Camille? She whines about wanting to learn but in reality she's fine with hanging out of the yacht with her brother and the handsome Drake, go out to dinner with them and be all googly eyes with him and then act all bitchy again about marriage. Now what also bugged me was that aart from the grandmother, who went about it the complete wrong way, no one ever truly explained any history to Camille. Gretchen sort of tried to help her with her powers, or would tell her about the importance of women in their world but that's it. And apparently every one was fine with that. I didn't get it. In fact world building was one of the biggest things missing here. Maybe there will be more explanation in the next books, but after having finished the first book I honestly only knew that centaurs are super fast and in reality only care about getting married. That's it. And for me that wasn't enough. less
