review 1: This book had a lot of potential. It has all the ingredients of a successful young-adult supernatural romance: a beautiful protagonist with supernatural abilities, two attractive men who are in love with her, mystery, action, and sexual tension. However, I was ultimately disappointed with it. Yes, the book does end in a suspenseful cliffhanger; however, the vast majority of the book is taken up with tediously similar relationship scenes and dialogue. Lauren and Max play out pretty much the exact same conversations with pretty much the exact same results and descriptions for the majority of the book. Nothing new is explained, nothing new happens, no new milestones are reached. The tedium is broken up by a few mysterious action scenes, but these are too few and far b... moreetween. The overarching supernatural plot is much too overshadowed by Lauren and Max's relationship. If you're a person who watches exclusively romantic comedies, loved the "Twilight" series, and doesn't like too much action, this is the book for you. The author sort of tries to throw in a love-triangle dynamic, which would have made the plot more interesting, but it fizzles out anti-climactically within the first few chapters, and Seth, who begins as a major character, awkwardly fades into the background into insignificance. None of the charters really have much of an identifiable personality. I'd say that both Max and Seth are essentially the same person in different packaging. Again, a situation which had a lot of potential which it disappointingly failed to reach. My last critique has to do with the believability of the age of the characters. This is a story which works nicely with a set of characters around the ages of 15-17. They're all seniors in college, yet they behave like bratty 16 year olds. Who ever heard of an entire group of 22 year olds who all still live at home, work at local fast food restaurants, have never passed first base with anyone, and who hang out at the mall in the very early morning as their preferred social activity? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the "taking it slow" motif in young-adult fiction- it's one of the reasons why I read the genre. There's something to be said for the build-up. But these characters are simply not believable in their age group.
review 2: From the first page you are completely wrapped up in Laurens life... She's an empath, though she doesn't know it. She's completely in tune to everyone's feelings and intentions, making her a natural target for disaster. The disaster that takes it to a new level is when she's shot in the leg during a robbery... she meets her soul mate that night. In her moment of courage, she's opened herself up to more than she expected possible.. less
