review 1: This novel has an intriguing premise: yes, a wife is kidnapped in Peru during the Sentiera Luminosa years and a huge ransom is demanded, but this is not a thriller. Instead, it gives the husband the opportunity to medidate on just how much he is willing to pay to free her, to muse about their life together, the cracks that were appearing in their marriage, the unresolved guilt that both he and his wife had for betraying an old friend. So it is more of a family story and an exploration of psychology (the second part of the book is told from the wife's perspective, after she is freed, which makes it even more interesting).However, I did feel the story meandered a bit too much, and could have done with some editing (especially in the second part). Some beautiful passages thou... moregh - this is an author who has a great way with words, great musicality and insight, so I will look forward to reading what she publishes next.
review 2: This was pretty good for a debut novel--probably deserves 3.5 stars. The topic was interesting---a husband faced with his wife's kidnapping in Peru. It was well written, but I was a little disenchanted with this married couple because of how they seemed to have fallen out of love. That shouldn't detract from the writing, but it did detract from the enjoyment of the story. Spoiler--he gets her back after sacrificing what he could, but she ends up asking him to leave; he has an old friend that he turns to, which I guess was supposed to be sweet (but I didn't wish it that way). less
