review 1: You have to get past the first twelve chapters to really appreciate this novel. This is not pop fiction. It doesn't lay on the drama but if you love AA history and if you are a fan of the older styles of literature that boasts dramatic descriptive language then you will appreciate this piece. I didn't like the protagonist but I liked the story that surrounded her. I was very disappointed when she consulted voodoo in her desperation. She was a very confused individual. ... moread after being highly touted. The plot was ridiculous...a black woman leaves her urban home to go to Lousiana and operate a sugar plantation that she inherited. And not a thriving one, but one neglected and without a manager or workers. Really? And somehow this woman is going to figure out how to turn it around with zero experience? Hah! less

A sugar cane primer. Great character development - so real they make you uneasy with recognition.

This book ended rather abruptly, with some unfinished or inadequately finished story lines.
