review 1: To be honest I did not have very high expectations going into this book. I assumed it would be a stereotypical middle grade book that is trying to teach American children about another culture. Being a huge Japanese fan I decided I had some extra reading time to devote to this book.When I started the first few chapters almost confirmed my initial thoughts. Then the book kicked off with Hiroshi’s chapter. When I found that he would have to move from Japan to America (and the two places could not be more different) I found a character I could invest in.I loved how they showed you all the difference in culture and I truly felt terrible for Hiroshi as he struggled to adapt to American ways and the English language.My over all favorite character however was Grandfather. He wa... mores such an amazing person to both his grandchildren even if one of them did not understand his actions.Your emotions become torn between Hiroshi and Skye (I mean Sorano) and you’re really not sure who you connect with more. I have to say this is one of the better books I have read this year. If you like Japanese culture then this book is for you no matter your age.
review 2: The book was wonderful-- poignant without being overly so, funny at times, sweet, and lovely. The story arc was satisfying without being predictable. The tension between Skye and Hiroshi wasn't overly dramatic, just real. The family relationships were true and honest. I loved it and the kids in my MG book club did, too. It was awesome. I highly recommend this book for the middle-grader in your life, or any adult who loves MG. less
