review 1: This is probably the best book I've ever read that deals with predictability, probability and statistics. Silver explores these subjects with a focus on financial markets, poker and, most interestingly, baseball statistics. Baseball provides a wealth of statistical information and yet seems to be almost impossible to predict. Why is it that we can know so much about something and still not know enough to predict outcomes with any regularity? Silver explores this and so much more in this amazingly academic, literate book that is, somehow, still easily and enjoyably readable. I've studied this subject for years and this is the best synthesizing of it I have ever read. This may not be the best introduction to the subject, but it is just about the best in every other... more way.
review 2: I probably would have rated this book more highly, if not for the abysmal editing. Honestly, one chart purported to compare x with y (as per the title), but in actuality, it compared x with x b/c no one bothered to proofread it and thus notice that both variables were labeled x! Many other cringeworthy errors throughout. Poor editing is a personal pet peeve, and I wish I could more easily look past it, because this book contained a lot of interesting (if shallowly addressed) content. less
