review 1: An enlightening book, giving the reader an unusual insight into the world of schizophrenia. As an area of mental health which is often ignored, I found this a good read; since I did not previously know much about how schizophrenia could manifest itself, and the disastrous consequences for loved ones as well as the individual themselves. However, the plot itself was possibly slightly clichéd and predictable, and so the storyline was not the main interest point for me. Having said that, the split continuum across which the novel was written made the limited plot more sustaining for the reader, and so this added intrigue allowed me to make it till the end of the book in spite of the rather banal storyline. Overall, an interesting book, though with not the most original of pl... moreots, but still worth a read.
review 2: This was a really moving novel, exploring mental health sensitively and realistically. Mental health isn't something that goes away and we see Matthew deal with his schizophrenia, knowing that there will be bad days but also, that there will be good times. We see a little boy experience death too soon, the impact that has on not only him but his family dynamics, we see his teen years transform from typical boy drama to a serious problem. This isn't a sugar coated read, there isn't always a happy piece of information, mental health is a scary thing for families and those with such issues. The hospital Matthew stays at shows how we don't really know enough to predict human behaviour and cure it, at the same time though, what else can be done?A beautiful novel with a brilliant take home message, it was moving, it was quirky and for me, one of the best books I've read in a long time. The characters were believable and interesting and the story was paced well. A great read. less
