review 1: I was hovering between 3 and 4 stars for this. Maybe because I've read this straight after an amazing Iain Banks novel I've been slightly less generous than I normally would. It's very competently written but just lacking a bit of spark for me. Nathan Filers managed to put in some of his frustrations about the mental health system ( his day job is as a mental health nurse) without sounding preachy and it's obviously very well researched. I can't put my finger on it but this didn't tip over into award winning for me.
review 2: Understanding the narrator is required to read any book. For this book it's Crucial thing. The blurb of the book reveals a main part of the story which I thought will have impact on the readers interest to complete the book. But trust me,
... moreit's got zilch effect. Besides the Average story it's awesomely written. I was taken aback when I read that it's Nathan Filer's first book as an Author and he's written eloquently making most of eve y character comes alive around Matt. This book pivots on 2 characters Simon and Matt. It's about Matt's life, how he lived it & ended. less
