review 1: When I began the book, I was immediately put off by the awkward phraseology, incorrect grammar, and poor writing (i.e., incomplete sentences, incorrect spelling, fuzzy descriptions - I could go on.....). However, I persevered because the story was set in a familiar locale to my own background: boarding school in the Indian mountains, teaching assignment (as well as student), and the gossip among teachers and students. The story then grabbed me and I couldn't put it down, which meant that I had to ignore the sometimes-awful writing. I have to ask how it got past the editors for publication?!
review 2: Would rather give it 3.5 stars, but I'll grant it the extra half for the beautiful atmosphere in my mind. The ending was very disappointing in my opinion, after
... more such a long, drawn-out and often repetitive plot summary. It was neat to look at the mystery from so many viewpoints but upon finishing the story, I felt incomplete. It is, however worth a read if you want to transport yourself to another time and place with ease. less
