review 1: This is a great story. Like Leapike Ridge was a modern-day retelling of The Odyssey for boys, this is a fast paced retelling of Beowulf in modern-day Florida with high school football, sugar cane harvest, the importance of fathers (whether good or bad), the strong bond of family, the wisdom and courage to do what is right no matter what the cost, and grace and forgiveness joy triumphing over grudges and envy and hate. In short, it has all the themes of Wilson's earlier stories all woven masterfully together in a great new story that never lets up pace for a moment. I can see sports-oriented boys who may struggle getting into the fantasy of the 100 Cupboards or the Ashtown Burials series being sucked into this story from the opening pages. Highly recomme... morended.
review 2: I never dislike any novel that Wilson writes and in fact he has set my expectations so high that I can't love this book. While I loved how he got me thinking about everything being made of sparks, of life (reminded me of one my favorite parts of 100 Cupboards, everything made of living words), it feels like a long good story that got shortened into an OK story. I enjoyed the two main characters, but I felt like their adventure came out of nowhere and disappeared that fast. Read it and enjoy the ride, but its not one of his most memorable books...it did however peak my interest to read Beowulf. less

A good, short read. It isn't Wilson's best, but it is a fun story that fast paced and enjoyable.

It could have used less very scary parts, but i actually read all of it in bed! (never do!)

It was well written, but I had trouble picturing the setting.
