review 1: I have read this free e-book from Amazon Kindle during my bloat hibernation last December 25th. The e-book includes an excerpt from Ocean at the End of the Lane. Reading the "How to Talk to Girls at Parties", my first impression was it's a narrative guide book on how to talk to girls. I thought, that's weird because Neil Gaiman is a storyteller not do-it-yourself author. As I've read the short story, I knew, I was wrong. If you read American Gods, you'll notice Neil Gaiman writing theme on this.I became more amused on the excerpt of the Ocean at the End of the Lane than reading this short story. Made me want to buy that novel.I'm giving this short story a score of 2.5 / 5.0. Neil Gaiman writes good but the story did not interest me. It's just not interesting.Th... moreanks!
review 2: This is a little short story provided gratis through BookShout, and it includes the prologue to Mr. Gaiman’s novel, “The Ocean at the End of the Lane.” I’ve read “American Gods,” so I was prepared for something unusual, though I initially thought it was gonna be some description of the author’s halting attempts at beginning heterosexual relationships in his teen years. Yeah, it’s that, and it’s obvious from the dialogue and terms that it’s from his native England. So the protagonist, Enn, accompanies his friend Vic, to a house party but Vic somehow lost the directions. Enn is a sort of shy guy, so Vic sees this as an opportunity for Enn to meet and talk to girls. They come across a house party, which seems to only have girls at it (Yahoo! – well, for a time). Vic hooks up with one of the beauties, Stella, and he and Enn quickly become informed that this is the wrong party, but the girls don’t seem to mind Vic’s and Enn’s presence there. There are some very well-written passages describing Enn’s halting attempts to befriend these mysterious female personages, and some of the things they say make one wonder just what, or who, they are – and just who is Hola Colt and who, or, where, is Wain? I won’t give away what happens when Vic and Stella disappear upstairs – or afterwards, that is, but I must say it was a fun little episode, and I’d recommend it. Just remember, Mr. Gaiman got a Hugo nomination in 2007 for this short story… less

This is my first experience with a Neil Gaiman story, and I have to say it took me completely by surprise! The story has a narrative that flows very easily and I found myself intrigued by the scenario and always wanting to know more. There was something about the main character, Enn, that was unique in a weird and great way, and we get to know through his words how it feels like to be a young and shy boy in an attempt to talk to unfamiliar girls at parties. This short story got me hooked from the start and it made me want to read even more of Gaiman's works.

Honestly, I don't know what to make of this short story. Basically, these two guys go to a party and the one goes upstairs with a girl while the other tries picking one up. After talking to a couple of girls, and striking out for various reasons, his friend reappears in a hurry and they both literally run off.I'm left sitting here wondering if the house of girls, where the party was, are aliens. Yup. That is all.2.5/5

Brilliantly written. A taste of nostalgia with an otherworldly twist.

He is very clever. He is too clever for my taste.
