review 1: I finished this book a few days ago - a reading club assignment. It was an interesting view into the world of mail-order marriages, aka finding a spouse on the internet. It was charming sometimes. I did not especially like the two main characters. The 9/11 attacks were woven in artfully - I appreciated that. The ending was vague as were some of the twists and turns in the storyline.
review 2: Years ago I'd enjoyed Freudenberger's Lucky Girls, so was happy to pick this up, although I hadn't heard of it.In a lot of ways, The Newlyweds was reminiscent of a Jhumpa Lahiri novel-- parsing the cultural similarities and differences between East and West. Freudenberger's characters, Amina and George, are complex, and their secrets come out as the novel goes on. Thei
... morer motivations for marrying each other are nuanced and I couldn't help but put myself in Amina's shoes, and feel both free and trapped.Freudenberger based this novel on a meeting with a fellow passenger on an airplane. Her characters and places seemed meticulously researched, but I felt, only a little and only at certain times, that she wrote condescendingly about Amina, especially in regard to her adjustment to life in Rochester, NY.In all, this was a surprisingly wonderful novel-- not perfect, but completely engaging. less
