review 1: The Very Cranky Bear follows four animals friends in the Jingly Jangly Jungle seeking a warm place to play. In a cave they enter, seeking shelter from the rain, only to be chased out by a very cranky bear. Zebra, Moose, and Lion all decide to cheer him up, in the hopes that Bear will let them in in his warm cave to play. Zebra offers up her stripes, Moose his antlers, and Lion his mane, but all to no use as Bear is not amused and is even more cranky than ever. It is quiet and plain Sheep who saves the day after realizing that Bear really wanted to sleep, figures out what Bear really needed. Author Nick Bland offers a fun and enjoyable book not only for the readers but especially the listeners. With rhyming throughout, big bold text, and the use of repetitive onomatopoeia, ... morechildren are engaged from start to finish. The illustrations, clean, bright, and with an almost Disney quality as another reviewer noted, brings the story to life with hilarious depictions of the animals personalities, as the well as the winning look of Bear with stripes, antlers and mane. Be prepared to read this book as the characters personalities demand a voice of their own and if you do it right, kids will have you re-reading this book at least 5 more times. Take it from someone who did just that!
review 2: This book is one of my all time favorite children's books. This story is about three friends, Moose, Lion, and Zebra, who try to escape the rain and hide in a cave. Only then do they encounter a cranky bear. They think the reason why the bear is so cranky is because the bear has no mane, stripes, or horns. But it is the sheep who realizes that the bear just needs a pillow made from wool to help him sleep. This book is perfect to read to young children because it is full of rhymes and really engages the listeners. Throughout the book, the bear is constantly roaring at the three friends and each friend has their own personality. The story line is not complicated, making it perfect for younger children. The illustrations go from page to page and give the child lots of things to look at while being read the story. Another great thing about this book is that it has a lesson behind it. The lesson is that we should accept others for who they are and that we should assume certain things will make people happy. less
