review 1: I am going to go out on a limb and say that this being the first book about the Salamanders by an author in the black library bull pen who I had never heard of or had handled anything this huge was a big risk, but one I think paid off. I feel like Nick Kyme captured the Space Marine characters very well, and wrote them true to what I know of them. He proved that he can handle emotion and raw battle with equal aplomb. I use that weird word only because Kyme insisted on using a wide assortment of obscure vocab words that stumped me more often than not. I think it is safe to say that I will welcome anything Kyme writes about the Space marines, and especially the Salamander chapter. This book is a great start to a trilogy I am very excited to conclude. Highly Recommend i... moref you are a fan of GW, space marines, or just good Mil Sci fi.
review 2: Just finished the book today, what a stonking good read! For anyone who likes Space Marines, the Salamanders or 40K at all, this is right up there with the best of them, save for perhaps a few minor niggles. The pacing is good and the balance between rhetoric and action well handled, though some plot points come a bit "oh, come ON!" towards the end as the power of plot hammer ensures the survival of the main characters (most of them, anyway)The niggles:1: The Marines Malevolent - they seem pretty cool and badass, but we don't really get to see enough of them, save for their "Swiper no swiping!" introduction and their "oh, by the way, remember us? We were actually integral to the plot!" reappearance.2: N'keln. Bless him, but he was always going to end badly - I was still gutted at how badly though...Niggles aside, a seriously good read, bring on book 2! less
