review 1: This is a short-story collection, and as such how good it is varies. Overall It has a great selection though, showing a wide segment of imperial society.I've always been fond of the short-story format, and have been of the belief that it's the format that's best suited for SF in general: It lets you get a concept across in a refined form without bogging you down the way it would if introduced in a novel. In this collection we get to see the Adeptus Custodes, the Emperor's personal bodyguards, in action, we get to see the Space Wolves save a belegured human world from dark eldar reavers... Only to turn on it once they fail to accept imperial rule, we get to see the Emperor of Mankind debate Earth's last priest, and we get to see the two angriest people in 40K bond in a way ... morethat is positively woobie-ish.Seriously, I never expected to feel this sorry for Angron (ALWAYS ANGRY ALL THE TIME!) and Kharn "Teamkill" The Betrayer. But the story is pretty darn good. Unfortunately I rather think this won't make any sense whatsoever without grounding in 40K lore. Which is a pity, since it was some of the more enjoyable reading I suffered through.
review 2: "Tales of Heresy is a collection of short stories that introduces or expands storyline perspectives and actors such as the Custodian Guard (the Imperial Bodyguard) and the Sisters of Silence, a classified Imperial organisation of warrior-nuns originally introduced in Book 4; most stories take place around the time of the Heresy. It includes two stories that take place on Terra, one of which is happening much earlier than the Heresy and adds to the background regarding the Imperial Truth; another entry in the compilation is an origin story describing the rise to Primarch of Angron (one of the Emperor's "sons"), who takes command of the 12th Legion, the World Eaters. Several stories relate to full-length novels in the Series; the book contains seven stories by various authors." less
