review 1: Alain owns a small, old-fashioned movie theater in Paris and his passion for the cinema is matched by his passion for a good love story. A woman, always wearing a red coat, is a regular patron and when he finally asks her to dinner it sets off a sequence of random coincidences that add a bit of suspense to the novel. What I loved best about this novel were the beautiful descriptions of Paris. I have only visited the city once, for a very short period, but I felt as if I remembered every minute while reading this book. Alain is a romantic with a great passion for what he does which definitely made up for some of his more over-the-top moments. Overall, this book was a nice surprise and I am grateful to have received it from NetGalley in exchange for an honest re... moreview.
review 2: It seems to me this book was heavily influenced by several different movies. The talk of Paris in the 20's, nostalgia, Hemingway, and a director named Allen wood=woody Allen all seem to be very similar to midnight in Paris. The repetitive sightings of the mysterious blond girl in the red coat who disappears even more mysteriously seems oddly reminiscent of the French film le apartment which was remade in America as wicker park. The concept of the owner of a business, that would usually no longer exist in this day and age, who gets caught up in paparazzi publicity with a celebrity seems a lot like hugh grant as the travel book store owner and Julia Roberts as the movie star in Notting hill. This book referenced quotes from Notting hill as well. I liked this book, but it seemed like all these story lines fused into one. less

This was such a lovely story! It was sweet and sentimental, and made me smile from beginning to end.
