review 1: This is the third of her books I have read and I believe she improves with each one. I read this as I traveled through China, including Shanghai, where I have been before. She made the era really come alive and, while I knew of the Japanese occupation and the Jewish Ghetto, the role of American musicians, as well as the gangs and the fighting between the nationalists and the communists, was relatively unknown to me. Thus, I found it not only a very fine read, with well-developed and complex characters, I feel I learned something.

The fortunate few were able to escape via Austria and the Chinese consul there, with ~25,000 living in Shanghai. That part of the story crosses over with Daniel Kalla's recent books "The Far Side of the Sky" and "Rising Sun, Falling Shadow". The bigger story involves also the role of gangs and triads, as well as romance and pain. less

Started off as a 4 star and then stalled out. Wanted so much to like it more.

Still not as good as "A Cup of Light" but better than "Chinese Chef"
