Book review: Robins! How They Grow Up, by Eileen Christelow

Christelow, Eileen. Robins! How They Grow Up. Clarion Books, 2017. Unp. $16.99. ISBN: 9780544442894. Gr. 2+. P8 Q8

Two young robins narrate this story as their father migrates from his winter home back to where he was born. The examination of robins includes choosing a mate, building a nest, laying and incubating eggs, what robins eat, predators that eat robins, migration, and life cycle. The information is presented in panels, much like a comic. The illustrations that accompany the panels were done using various Photoshop brushes on a IMac and a Wacom Pro tablet. Included at the end of the book is a section titled “More about Robins” which adds even more details about robins.

Verdict:  Teachers planning a unit on birds could use this book to start the unit off. This book would then be a great resource to refer back to when comparing the likes and difference of birds to the robin.
