review 1: A powerful book and a call to action. What have I been doing with my life and how am I living for Him. I wished Nik Ripken would have elaborated more on the stories, but he has certainly compelled me to relook my priorities and even my hesitation in sharing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to anyone who would listen. It's so refreshing to read how the power of the Holy Spirit is moving just as in the early church. More sobering is how we Christian in Malaysia may have been living in a state of denial when it comes to sharing the gospel to our Muslim brothers....
review 2: Wow. This book is heart-rending, uplifting, and incredibly, incredibly convicting. It's going to twist you up, but it's a good kind of twisting.Nik Ripken (nom de plume) went into S
... moreomaliland in the 1990s to serve God. It was a dark, spiritually oppressive experience (everything they tried to do for good ended up backfiring, the few Believers they did meet were killed). So a tired, hurting Nik goes on a journey to other places with a history of oppressing and persecuting Believers to see how these Believers coped and kept their faith. What he found was more than Believers coping with persecution, they were flourishing in the midst of their harsh circumstances. These were people who, because of their faith, were humiliated and stripped of wealth and property. Jailed. Tortured. Their families put in jeopardy. Yet they still worshipped. They still discipled. They still smuggled in Bibles. They still witnessed. One of the things that stuck with me was a comment a man who had been jailed and tortured told Nik: don't give up in freedom what we did not give up in captivity. In other words, these men and women are facing true persecution; they are suffering in deep ways, yet they are actively working to increase God's Kingdom. Are we, who have ready access to God's Word, who do not face jail for sharing our beliefs, pursuing Him with the same zeal? You see what I mean about convicting? There were stories about: Believers ripping out books of the Bible to distribute them amongst lay leaders so everyone would have some part of God's Word to study and teach from. A man who got up every morning to face East in his jail cell to sing his "heartsong" to Jesus, even with the other prisoners mocking him. And about how jail became a kind of seminary for Believers in China, because they got to meet other Believers and share their knowledge as they encouraged each other to grow in the faith.Another point that really stuck with me is that God is the same. The God in the Old and New Testaments operates in the same way today. He sets up divine appointments. He shows us miracles. He speaks. He loves.Nik purports that persecution isn't something to avoid -- that it is part of our faith. It is the picking up of our cross and following Him. That perhaps our prayers should be more about asking for help in enduring rather than asking for help in avoiding. And in every circumstance and hardship and victory, God is there. He is worth the pain and sacrifice. His people will thrive in oppression and persecution, because of who He is. That is the Insanity of God. less
