review 1: Watching protagonist Victoria Vernon evolve as her situation changes from ultra-wealthy demanding diva, to worse than broke with 2 kids to take care of, and then predictably work her way out of it again, was more than believable, and a heartening journey to follow. There is some mystery -- what happened to her husband? Where did he go that even the FBI can't find him? Is he even still alive? There is some romance -- she does have good memories of her husband, the FBI agent assigned to follow her everywhere is quite a hunk, and there's an old school-mate who suddenly wants to pay attention to her. And since I listened to it via Kindle's text-to-speech (rather than reading visually), I was able to start early in the morning and actually get to the end all in one day without ... moredetouring away from the regular chores that had to get done today. Very much enjoyed it!
review 2: Victoria and her husband Trip live the "perfect" life in NYC. Designer clothes and shoes, staff to take care of them, an endless round of parties and events, and everything that money can buy. Until the fateful day that there is a knock on the door and armed men enter the apartment. Oddly enough, it is not a burglary but FBI agents who have come to seize their property. Victoria is in shock when they are allowed to take very few of their possessions. It is a short time later that she finds that her funds have been cut off, too. What's a newly penniless girl to do? The only option that is open is to return to the wealthy town where she grew up - on the wrong side of the tracks - and spent a lifetime trying to forget and never planned to return to. As she shows up on her mother and stepfather's door step she begins the process of being in survival mode and learns that her trappings of wealth might not be all that they were cracked up to be.The story line moves along nicely and the portrayal of the wealthy, snooty Victoria who is brought down several pegs was quite good. Some nice humorous banter peppered the story and made you smile. A pleasant read all around, even if her relationship with the FBI agent who is assigned to follow her is unrealistic. I would read other books written by this author. less
