review 1: "The Age of Dreaming" is narrated by Jun Nakayama, and the story lies as much in his telling of it as in the events he narrates. Revoyr has created a compelling voice for Jun, somewhat remincient of Christopher Banks in Kazuo Ishiguro's "When We Were Orphans." He relates a story of early Hollywood and the scandal he thinks of as having ended his career. Yet what I found most interesting was the careful way in which he has created narratives that allow him to see a world he can live in and with. Revoyr shows us why Jun would need to do so, but also how his lack of bravery in facing the world he did in fact live in harmed him and, most significantly, those who might have been close to him.
review 2: I was pretty underwhelmed by this. Revoyr's Southland was so pow
... moreerful, I thought all her books would be as moving but this one was not. I found it really hard to get into this book and don't remember much of it because it was so average. I do remember it being pretty predictable. Switching from past to present, the main character's life as a silent film star was intriguing at first but grew tiresome quickly. less

Life is too short to read bad books. I couldn't get into this book and it was way too predictable!
